Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)

A Safe and Non-Toxic Option For Many Health Conditions

When given at low doses, naltrexone has demonstrated an ability to increase the body's production of endorphins, or natural, endogenous opiates. Studies show these molecules can improve pain relief, immune system function, tissue healing, inflammation, and overall well-being. Because naltrexone works on a family of receptors that is ubiquitous throughout the body, there are many potential applications and health benefits.

Naltrexone has been commercially available since the 1980s as an FDA approved treatment for opioid addiction, typically dosed at 50mg to 200mg per day. These higher doses result in the drug acting as a pure antagonist, or inhibitor, on a variety of opioid receptors in the body, blocking the effects of opioid medications at these sites. When used at much lower doses, such as 0.001mg to 16mg, naltrexone produces an intermittent receptor blockage, creating a rebound effect and increased endorphin production.

Compounded For Precise Dosing

For low dose naltrexone therapy to achieve optimal results, the dosing must be very exact (often to 0.1mg increments). This can only be obtained through precise compounding. It is also important for compounding pharmacists to have specialized training on LDN dosing protocols for various conditions. Naltrexone provides the best clinical outcomes when it is started at a very low dose and slowly increased to find the ideal dose that meets the needs for each individual patient. Our clinical pharmacist has specialized in LDN for many years and collaborates with other practitioners to titrate patients to their optimal dose while minimizing side effects and adjusting doses as patient responses changes over time.

Before starting LDN, a comprehensive review of medications, supplements, and health conditions should be completed. LDN can result in the need for slight dose modifications of other medications so it is important to work with a experienced LDN practitioner to monitor for potential dosing adjustments. LDN is very well tolerated in most patients, including adults, children, and even animals, and side effects tend to be short lived. Starting at a very low dose and increasing that dose slowly helps to avoid possible side effects. The compounded dosage form as well as the time of day that LDN is taken can also assist in minimizing side effects.

Possible Mild Side Effects

  • Vivid dreams or sleep disturbances

  • Headache

  • Agitation

  • Nausea or gastrointestinal effects

Commonly Used Dosage Forms

  • Oral capsules

  • Oral liquid

  • Sublingual Drops - can avoid GI side effects

  • Topical cream

Why Quality Sourcing Matters

Quality is extremely important in compounding, particularly with naltrexone therapy. Education and experience is also crucial since many chemicals, including naltrexone, require specific calculations to obtain the correct dose within various formulations. The calculations and appropriate sourcing of the active ingredient for your compounded preparation are critical for the optimal LDN therapy outcomes.

Peachy-Keen Health + Wellness is proud to order our naltrexone powder from the industry's best supplierThrough years of experience and extensive research, we have found differences in quality among chemical suppliers and have identified Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) as the supplier with the highest standards. To learn more about the measures PCCA takes to provide us with quality ingredients, visit thepccastandard.pccarx.com.

At Peachy-Keen Health + Wellness, we also go above and beyond by performing capsule weight checks on all batches of compounded capsules. This ensures that each capsule contains the same amount of medication as another. We also surpass legal requirements by sending our compounded products to a third party for potency testing every month. This verifies our procedures and gives you peace of mind that you are receiving exactly what the label states.
