Why did your doctor prescribe a compounded medicine for you?

Doctors send us prescriptions for compounded medications because they have determined that a mass-produced commercial medication is not the best way to meet your health needs. Our expert pharmacist formulates a compound with your doctor's desired strength and dosage form for our lab to prepare from scratch just for your prescription.

Who can prescribe compounded medications?

Any practitioner licensed to prescribe medications can authorize a compounded prescription. If you already have a doctor willing to prescribe a compounded medication, we can work with them to customize it for you. If they are not familiar with compounding, we are happy to collaborate with your doctor. We can also assist if you need a referral to a doctor that prescribes compounds. You can view a list of prescribers that already work with us here.

Can I fill a compounded medication at any pharmacy?

Not all pharmacies have the equipment or training to compound and, due to vague federal and state regulations, not all compounding pharmacies follow the same procedures or test their preparations equally. Unlike many pharmacies, we are a compounding-only pharmacy, which means we focus on exemplary compounding all day every day. Learn about The Peachy-Keen Difference to see what sets us apart from other compounding pharmacies.

How much do compounded prescriptions cost?

Pricing for a customized compounded prescription can vary. Many factors play a role our pricing including the number of active ingredients, how long it takes to compound, the difficulty of the formulation and dosage form, required protective gear and specialized equipment, and potency testing of the finished product, just to name a few. Please call and speak to our pharmacist for more details on your specific compound at (208) 203-1355.

Will insurance pay for my compounded medication?

Some insurance plans may pay for part of a compounded prescription but we can not guarantee any insurance coverage. We do not bill insurance directly but can provide you with a universal claim form that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

Why is compounding important?

Compounding is important because one size does not fit all, especially when it comes to medicine.

  • Ingredient Allergies: The number of patients who suffer from allergies to inactive ingredients in commercial medications continues to grow. We can offer many alternatives to fillers, flavors, sweeteners, and dyes that allow us to avoid problematic inactive ingredients.

  • Dosing: If the specific dose needed for a patient is not commercially available, we can formulate a compound for the exact strength desired.

  • Dosage Form: Sometimes a commercially manufactured medication isn't an ideal dosage form to deliver the medicine to a patient. We can compound a large variety of different forms including creams, sublingual tablets, suppositories, suspensions, and even lollipops and popsicles!

  • Flavoring: Some medications taste terrible but sometimes we can mask the bitterness or change the flavor. Ask us about medication flavoring options for you, your child, or your pet today!

  • Unique Delivery Forms: Using medications at different body sites can sometimes enhance medication effects or avoid common GI side effects from oral medications.

  • Drugs No Longer Available: Some commercially manufactured medications frequently have availability issues. We can often compound the medication if high-quality raw active ingredients are available.

Is compounding legal? Is it safe?

Yes, compounding is both legal and safe! Pharmacy originated with compounding before medications were commercially mass-produced and is still used widely today in medicine. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), compounded prescriptions are both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded by a licensed pharmacy. Compounding is additionally regulated by state boards of pharmacy. Compounding is growing in popularity due to increasing patient requests for more personalized medicine and is safer than ever due to advances in technology, quality control and research.
